A Life of love

Sixty one years ago Bharananganam was quite an unknown place and found no mention in the history of the world. By the holiness of a poor clarist nun called Alphonsa it has come to be known all over the world.

Sister Alphonsa was a noble woman who lived all human virtues in their fullness. Love was the special attribute of her personality. She loved everybody with a strong feeling of affection, not only those who loved her but also people who were harsh towards her. A heart which is filled with genuine love can never keep any kind of animosity, resentment or ill feelings against anybody and anything. She would say that her heart was full of love. This was the cause of her holiness.

Jesus, her beloved spouse, bestowed upon her all the virtues like prudence, fortitude temperance etc. Besides these, the theological virtues such as faith, hope and charity were granted abundantly to her. In short, we can describe her as an embodiment of virtues and love. God himself prepared her in a special way to entrust certain sacred duties to her.

The duty was to love Jesus with all her strength and might. Real love means to renounce one’s own comfort and pleasure for the sake of the loved ones. Blessed Alphonsa forced herself from the depth of her heart to abstain from everything which was found worthy in the eyes of the world. She asked for more and more sufferings to become one with the crucified Jesus. Her sufferings and agonies were never a curse for her, but a sign of the greatest love. She was ready to take any kind of sacrifice for the sake of Jesus. She felt immense joy while suffering for her beloved Jesus.

There were sleepless nights due to the violent attack of diseases; there were times of intense sufferings and hardships. There were occasions of blame and accusations. There were moments of misunderstanding and helplessness. She never felt any regret over it since she found an interior happiness in the midest of all these sufferings. Because she had an unceasing thirst to love the crucified Jesus everything was for Jesus. She was a moving temple. Here Temple means a place made holy by the presence of God. People would find the face of Jesus in her. Really her life was a holocaust for love.

The remarkable life of a young Catholic nun came to an end on 28 th July 1946. She was unknown to the public till her death. Only a few attended her funeral. There appeared no news in the media about the death of Sr. Alphonsa.

God the almighty had been well pleased to exalt and honour the one who became a burnt offering for his sake. The very next day of the funeral people who knew her sanctity started to pray through her instrumentality and received favours.

Now there is an incessant flow of pilgrims to her tomb. She lies buried in the cemetary of Bharananganam parish church. A cemetary inspires fear in the minds of the people. People will hesitate to enter it. But the cemetary of Bharananganam became a crowd puller almost as soon as her death. It continues to be so.

Alphonsa’s Message to Us

Saint Aplphonsa is a great gift God bestowed on our community. She lived only a short life – a life that went largely unnoticed. But the quality of her life ensured her a place in heaven from where she is now showering on us, like St. Therese of Lisieux, the flowers of blessings. Bhararananganam has transformed itself into another Lisieux. Thousands of people flock to her tomb every year seeking her intercession in the hour of their need.

Hers was a simple and prayer-oriented life. Simplicity of heart is a condition for being in harmony with God. It is this simplicity that enabled her to accept suffering as a gift from God. Alphonsa’s life teaches us the greatness of suffering though the prevailing tendency of the modern world is to shy away from suffering. Suffering sanctifies our life; we cannot lead a proper Christian life without accepting it: this is the message that saint Alphonsa conveys to us through her life.

Saint Alphonsa Quote

“Grains of wheat, when ground in the mill, turn in to flour. With this flour we make the wafer of the holy Eucharist. Grapes, when crushed in the wine press, yield their juice. This juice turns into wine. Similarly, suffering so crushes us that we turn into better human beings.”

Novena of St. Alphonsamma

Oh, Saint Alphonsa, you have been graciously chosen from our midst to be united with Jesus Christ, our savior, in the misery of his passion, death and resurrection. You have grown to the heights of holiness and have been crowned with heavenly glory.

Help us in our trials and tribulations. Oh! Daughter of sufferings, obtain for us the grace to lead a holy life, following your example, in total submission to the will of God. Be with us, transforming all our sorrows into a holy sacrifice in union with Christ Crucified, in reparation to our sins, for the sanctification and salvation of the whole world.
Amen

Prayer for the intercession of St. Alphonsamma

O, Holy Spirit, descend upon us. Pour out your gifts upon us and strengthen us in faith. Guide us with the hope for the kingdom of heaven. Enkindle our hearts with the fire of divine love. Just as you led St. Alphonsa along the path of sanctity, lead us also on the path of righteousness. Grant us the grace to grow in sanctity and wisdom, by serving you faithfully in humility and gentleness.

Celebrant : With joy and hope in our hearts, let us pray: "Lord, hear our prayer".

All : Lord, hear our prayer.

Celebrant : Lord, you raised Sr. Alphonsa to the host of the Saint., fill us with the spirit of prayer and sacrifice.

All : Lord, hear our prayer.

Celebrant : Lord, grant us the grace to seek the hand of god in all our sufferings and sorrows, like St. Alphonsa who bore witness to you through her sufferings and self-sacrifice.

All : Lord, hear our prayer.

Celebrant : Lord Jesus, you offered yourself as a victim on the cross for us sinners. St. Alphonsa imitated you by offering herself as a victim on your alter. Grant us the strength and grace to offer ourselves to you every moment, as a burnt offering, like this holy sister.

All : Lord, hear our prayer.

Celebrant : Lord Jesus, at the moment of your death agony, your prayer to the father saying: "Not my will, but they will be done". St. Alphonsa also imitated you praying in the same fashion. Help us to see you in our superiors and do your will in all circumstances.

All : Lord, hear our prayer.

Celebrant : Lord Jesus, when we gather for the retreat, to experience and grow in your love, let us be transformed like an actual disciple of yours, filled with your love to reach to the people around us to proclaim the good news.

All : Lord, hear our prayer.

Let us pray

Merciful and benevolent God, we offer ourselves completely to you. We give you thanks for all the blessings you shower upon us. Forgive us our sins and offences. Lord, you gave us St. Alphonsa as our model and mediator. We seek her intercession now. Protect us from all evils, spiritual and material. Fill us with your blessings. We make this prayer in your name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen.

St. Alphonsa - Prayer

O Lord Jesus, hide me in the wound of your sacred heart. Free me from my desire to be loved and esteemed. Guard me from my evil attempts to win fame and honor. Make me humble till I become a small spark in the flame of love in your Sacred Heart. Grant me the grace to forget myself and all worldly things. Jesus, sweet beyond words, convert all worldly consolations into bitterness for me. O my Jesus, Sun of Justice, enlighten my intellect and mind with your sacred rays. Purify my heart, consume me with burning love for you, and make me one with you.
